Add in all of the PlayStation love letters scattered about inside these worlds and you have another magical, must-play experience from Team Asobi. I wish Astro’s latest adventure lasted longer but I have no doubt that we’ll be seeing more of the new PlayStation mascot in the future. Upon jumping into the Cooling Springs level, I didn’t have to play long before feeling just how next-gen this controller is.
The game’s 16 levels feature nasty little bots to defeat, and little secrets and character cameos to find, such as the Buster Sword from Final Fantasy 7 or Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima. Levels have Astro jumping on fluffy clouds in Memory Meadows, skating along the ice in Cooling Springs, or blowing up asteroids in a later level in SSD Speedway. Need to get back to it for the special bots, downloaded it the other day but just haven’t got around to it. (LeMans and other duties) @BrettAwesome It’s been updated, hasn’t it. It seems the special bots are integrated into the guide as opposed to being tacked on as an addendum.
So getting to literally dig up fossils of the past and then have the physical representations of my nostalgia gamified within a game even further was just magical. These aspects don’t fundamentally change how Astro’s Playroom plays. But they make those moments you’ve experienced before feel more interesting and immersive. Earning Gold Trophies in Astro Playroom demands exceptional skill and precision. These trophies are tied to challenging tasks like speedrunning specific levels or completing difficult sections without taking damage. One notable trophy requires defeating a boss using only melee attacks‚ while another involves navigating a tricky obstacle course flawlessly.
The core quest in Astro’s Playroom is to retrieve the four main artefacts across four different, diverse levels. Each level is split into four key areas, two of which are reliant on a feature of the DualSense, all are mandatory to complete the levels. As soon as I encountered the first of these, I knew I would have serious issues with this game when it comes to my disability. I opted to enter Memory Meadow first, a charming area with fields aplenty. The mandatory interaction area in this level required the use of the touchpad, namely to flick repeatedly in the direction you wish to travel to move the ball. I managed fine at first, but the muscles in my hand rapidly began to exhaust before I had even completed the area.
Puzzle Piece 2/4 – Once you reach the ice ramp, instead of proceeding forward jump down to the right where you can find this puzzle piece under the platform you’re meant to jump to. Puzzle Piece 1/4 – Right after getting into the spring suit, charge a jump to the left to break through the glass to find this puzzle piece. Puzzle Piece 1/4 – On the lower floor of CPU Plaza, pull the three wires on the platform in the corner by the ramp down to reveal this puzzle piece.
Astro’s Playroom is not that game, as it’s quite short and still at least 50% tech demo, but since so few will ever get to play Rescue Mission it’s an important step towards that goal. It’s also free with every new PlayStation 5, so it’s the one game that you can almost guarantee everyone will play – and it gives a very good first impression. Other ways to defeat enemies are by jumping and hovering above them and hitting them with Astro’s lasers.
The cameos are plentiful and amusing, with franchises that go beyond the first-party catalogue, along with some surprisingly deep cuts that made me feel very old. But in the midst of all that history, Astro feels like an adorably fresh face; I’m glad to see the character break out of the confines of VR and reach out to a broader audience. Astro’s Playroom may not be the deepest or most ambitious game on PS5, but its humor and playfulness are just delightful. Even though Astro’s Playroom is relatively simple, it kept me entertained for about five hours with its array of challenges and entertaining Easter eggs. During Astro’s jaunt through the guts of the PS5, you run across all sorts of PlayStation references and memorabilia.
This zone’s suit is the Rocket Suit, which you control with the Adaptive Triggers and the SIXAXIS tilt controls. Every review comes from a verified owner of this game or item and is evaluated by a team of moderators. The game is free for all PS5 console users and is designed to be enjoyed by gamers and families alike.
This includes all the aforementioned key areas of levels with physical mandatory controls, but also some minor elements that appear briefly through the game. Whilst there are serious problems, I personally found these to have a workaround that made them doable.

But, more importantly, it’s a promise of new and treasured memories to come. Sony leans into its PlayStation past in this frequently innovative, supremely charming old-school 3D platformer. However, I have been very disappointed in their increasingly silly take on PSSR. If you have only unlocked one or two in Astro’s Playroom, they will appear here individually, meaning you can return and get the rest when you are ready.
Steps To Unlock The Platinum Trophy
The real gimmick of Astro’s Playroom is the utilization of the DualSense controller. Players can feel the vibrations simulated from the game, like raindrops on Astro’s head, or feel the strong gusts of wind, the feeling of walking on a sandy beach, and many more. There are areas where Astro must ascend while in a miniature rocket, and players must exert more effort pressing the adaptive triggers. When you get to the very end of the level, you’ll land on a Sacred Symbols rainbow bridge. Turn around and run to the start of the bridge to see two bots at the title screen of “Bot of War”. This title screen references 2005’s God of War for the PS2, developed by SIE Santa Monica Studio.
Skill Level
It was he who developed the SNES sound chip for Nintendo, which led to the Play Station add-on for the system. When this partnership fell through, Kutaragi persevered and developed it into a standalone console, resulting in the original PlayStation. The “Hell Diver” Trophy, awarded for jumping off the tallest diving board at the end of Bot Beach.
Astro’s Playroom isn’t just a tech demo but a fun little platformer. It’s great that Sony is investing more in the Astro Bot franchise because this could be their answer to the Super Mario series. The level design is more like Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D World, and that’s a huge compliment.
