Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 releases for PC via Steam and Epic on Thursday, 30th January – and as we recently learned, it won’t require a PSN account to play after all. With just a day to go until Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 swings onto PC, Sony has shared details of its platform-enhanced features, as well as the hardware required to run it. According to credible rumors, Marvel’s Venom by Insomniac Games is doing well, and gamers suspect it could become a launch title for the PlayStation 6. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is a singleplayer game, not featuring online play of any sort. The district of Queens has also been added to the game, expanding the map.
Easily jumping off the screen, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 allows players to take control of both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, freely switching between the two on the fly. More is definitely more in this case, as players follow individual storylines and take side missions, some exclusive to each character. Miles assists Rio in protecting the culture and musical legacy of the city by investigating and preventing a museum robbery. Peter and Harry return to EMF in an attempt to learn more about Harry’s newfound powers, and let him safely practice. Peter and Miles oversee a prisoner transfer at the R.A.F.T., but are rudely interrupted by Kraven and his forces as they seek to capture the villains for unknown purposes. The symbiote convinces Harry to “heal the world” by infecting everyone on Earth with symbiotes, starting with New York. Harry, now calling his symbiote Venom, transforms Mary Jane into Scream, but Peter helps her break free after battling and reconciling with her. As Peter and Miles attempt to stop Venom, Peter is debilitated by a trace amount of the symbiote still within him. After Miles settles his differences with Li, the latter uses his powers to convert Peter’s symbiote traces into the Anti-Venom Symbiote and becoming him into Anti-Venom Spider-Man, which can destroy other symbiotes.

New factions and units, such as flamethrower-wielding cultists that keep you at a distance, flying drones, and hunters who deploy laser grids above your head to limit aerial attacks keep you on your sticky toes. Certain enemies are weak to different types of abilities, such as electric or symbiote attacks, which also adds an enjoyable extra wrinkle to fights. It’s by no means revolutionary stuff, but a welcome added level of complexity that makes you consider which powers – or even which Spider-Man – are best for a given job. The result is a cinematic but messy experience that not only still bears all the same flaws as its predecessor, but in many areas—particularly the storytelling—feels like a step backwards. The ropiness of this PC port is a sad addition to the issues, resulting in a flawed version of an already flawed sequel.
There are so few important landmarks in this version of New York City that the game could’ve taken place in a regular town and felt no different. Kraven the Hunter is the main villain for most of Spider-Man 2 and he isn’t anywhere near interesting or dynamic enough to be in that role. Instead, there are 4 combat abilities for each character, and 4 shared gadgets.
